"John Mingle was born in 1758. His service in the American struggle for independence is included in the DAR Index of Patriots. He came to Madison County during the 1820's and settled in Fall Creek Township [Madison County] along with other members of this family. Here on Lick Creek grew the little settlement of Menden with a church, school and a few places of business.
"John Mingle died in 1842 at the age of eighty-four. He was buried in the Menden Cemetery then under the auspices of the settlement's early Methodist Church.
